Natural solutions to Gum Disease

Today I had the dreaded dentist check up appointment, even at my age and although I know it doesn’t hurt as much as I think it will, I still get anxious every time. Luckily my teeth are pretty healthy, although today she told me my gums are starting to show signs of gum disease or gingivitis.  Something that surprised me as I have no symptoms such as bleeding gums, clean my teeth regularly and eat pretty healthy.  Whereas the causes of gum disease is often due to poor dental hygiene, smoking, immune related illness, emotional stress, poor nutrition and excesss sugar consumption.

Gingivitis or gum disease is a type of infection of the tissues of the mouth that support the teeth. The most common gum and mouth problems are periodontal diseases that are bacterial infections that lead to inflammation and eventually destroy the gums and other supporting tissues surrounding the teeth.   The bacteria builds up into a sticky film or plaque as we know it, that forms around the teeth and gums and if it is not removed will harden and becomes known as tartar.  Both plaque, tartar and the bacteria involved irritate and inflame the gums.

The progression of periodontal disease is:

  • Gingivitis – gums are red, swollen, and bleed easily.
  • Periodontal pockets – plaque begins to form below the gum line and pockets form.
  • Periodontitis – The chronic presence of plaque, tartar, and attending bacterial infection destroys the gum and bone structure that supports the teeth and may result in them becoming loose and needing removal.

The good news is all of these conditions can be addressed and improved with diet and lifestyle change. So for the next few months I’m focussing on getting my gums healthy with diet, nutrition, natural mouthwash solutions and homeopathic remedies.

Foods that Help Treat Gum Disease

To reverse gum disease, you must start with a healthy diet high in fibre, vitamins, minerals and healthy fats which includes:

Wild-caught fish – Salmon, mackerel, and sardines all contain omega-3s that can help reduce inflammation. Or you could take a good quality Omega-3 supplement.

Fresh vegetable juice – These help to reduce inflammation and provides essential nutrients to the system.

Chewing gum with xylitol – Xylitol prevents the build-up of bacteria.

Raw Vegetables and Apples – It’s true what they say, an apple a day keeps the dentist away, apples can help naturally clean teeth.

Fat soluble vitamins – Consuming foods high in fat soluble vitamins including raw milk, coconut, beef liver, bone broth, and grass-fed animal meat can fight gingivitis.

Foods that Cause Gum Disease

These are the top foods that will lead to tooth decay and cause gum disease:

Sugar – This feeds bacteria and buids up bacteria in the gut, avoiding sugar wherever possible in your diet will be important for gum health.

Fruit juice – Juice is high in sugar and can coat the teeth with sugar and feed the bacteria.

Processed foods – These foods can contain a lot of additives and sugar that can promote the growth of bacteria.

Grains – When grains are unsprouted and unfermented contain an acid that can increase gingivitis and can break down into sugar quickly.

Hydrogenated oils – Including vegetable oil, canola oil, corn oil, and soybean oil can cause inflammation of the gums and body, switch to coconut oils or olive oil.

These are the natural Remedies I’m using to reverse my symptoms, alongside a few homeopathic remedies, some of which I’ll list below.

Top 5 Gum Disease Natural Treatments

Try these gum disease cures and natural treatments for fast results:

Flossing (1-2x daily) – I floss occasionally, but the dentist reminded me I have to floss morning and night to remove food that is lodged in teeth preventing bad bacteria from growing.

Clove, tea tree and Peppermint oil essential oils and Oil Pulling (5 mL 2x daily) – Rubbing these essential oils of clove and melaleuca (tea tree) on your gums or brushing teeth with them has antibacterial properties and can prevent gingivitis. Apply 2 drops of these oils 2x daily with carrier oil like coconut oil.  I also find swirling a mixture of coconut oil and essential oils around my mouth as a mouth wash helps, a technique known as “oil pulling”, you must not swallow the solution after the oil pulling.

Or you could make your own toothpaste using 4 tablespoons of coconut oil, 2 tablespoons of baking soda, 20 drops of cinnamon or close oil, 20 drops of peppermint oil – put all the ingredients in a bowl, mix and store in a glass jar with a lid with a little water.

Coenzyme Q10 (100 mg daily) – The supplement CoQ10 can have a healing effect on gingivitis.  To order high quality supplements visit this page

Vitamin C (1000 mg 2x daily) or “Mistify” – Vitamin C helps strengthen gums and helps with healthy tissue formation. I’m taking “Mistify” a high strength antioxidant drink, high in Vitamin C and made from the Acai berry, blueberry, cranberry, lyceum, bilberry, pomegranate and green tea leaf.   The natural fruit blend contains naturally occurring levels of antioxidants, essential fatty acids and amino acids.  You can order Mistify from me, click the link here for more info

Green tea (1 to 3 cups daily) – Make sure it’s unsweetened, the polyphenols can help fight gingivitis.  The Mistify listed above contains green tea leaf as well.
